ScotRail 1987-96
----------------

Version 1: Commenced September 1995, issued April 1996
By Iain W Logan MCIT

This is a BAHN340 NT3 simulation of the complete Scottish railway network of
British Rail, based on the Quail Map as at 1987. You will require the BAHN340
program (RSIM32.ZIP) to use this network file.

Files:
------

SCOTRAIL.NT3 - The layout file.
SCOTRAIL.TXT - This file!
SCOTRAIL.BMP - Map of the network.
SCOTNET.ICO - Windows Icon.

Track Layout
------------

The layout is as accurate as possible geographically, but the North - South
axis has been rotated about 35 degrees clockwise, to give the 'best fit'.

I have no figures for the current route mileage, but as an indication of the
size of the layout, the distance from Carlisle to Wick is 430 miles.

For reasons of space this simulation excludes detail of the inner Glasgow
Suburban Area, which is to be a separate, large scale simulation. This area
is shown in the form of an 'inset'. Tracks within the 'inset' are purely for
the purposes of routeing, and bear no resemblance to the prototype
whatsoever. My separate simulations 'Glasgow Suburban Electrification Stage
1' (GSE1.NT3) and 'Glasgow Central' (GLC.NT3) also give details of this area,
but at different time periods.

Track layouts at other major centres have also been simplified and/or
reworked to suit the needs of BAHN340, and the scale of 4 elements per km has
been expanded locally where necessary.

I have also added new or re-opened stations up to the present date.

Otherwise, I have tried to keep the trackwork as accurate as I can, but in
order to free up enough points (switches) I have had to use crossings and
track sections in order to 'fake' unused connections. Where I've been able to
I've added the names of former stations and signalboxes along the lines of
route.

Passenger Services (50 routes)
------------------------------

Passenger services are (very) loosely based on the Winter 1994/95 Saturdays
timetable, and have been modified where necessary to avoid conflicts. Believe
it or not, the hardest services to implement were those on the single line
stretches. Fort William station is a case in point, where delayed trains can
lock up the system. It works fine if left to its own devices! The BAHN340 MU
train types selected were those which bear a passing resemblance to the
prototype. The loco hauled passenger trains were selected simply to provide a
variety, and to be able to see at a glance what was going on. Electric locos
work on services wholly under the wires and diesel locos were used for the
rest. In certain case where trains would normally divide or join up I have
used shuttle services instead.

Freight Services (24 Routes)
----------------------------

The freight services owe more to my imagination than to any particular
timetabled workings. Some closed lines have a service (such as the Greenock
Clydeport train) and there are probably more freights around than there would
be in real life, although hopefully things will change for the better.

I am always pleased to receive comments and suggestions as to how my layouts
might be improved. Nothing's perfect - so don't hesitate to contact me.

Have fun!
