THE LONDON UNDERGROUND

The London Underground about 1980, before the Docklands Light Railway and
Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 extension were opened. Not to scale - more like
the system map!

This layout roughly represents a weekday service. The depiction of the
timetable is not particularly accurate, but I do think that it reflects the
complexity of the system very well. All track layouts are now fairly
complete, and are based on the LT, ER, LMR SR and WR 'Quail' maps, the BR
ones dating from c1988-9. With the later maps I've used 'Then and Now'
pictures and OS maps of the period to work out what infrastructure to add
fpr the c.1981 period.

There are brief instructions on how to navigate the layout in the 'Home'
square - you'll see them when you load the layout.

If you wish a tour of the system, there are two engineers' trains which
depart from Lillie Bridge Depot after 2330. Follow them for a tour around
several lines at night.

I never thought it would be possible to put in such a big network, but it
just goes to show ...

Thanks to Barry Coward, formerly of LTE, for his help in filling in details
not found elsewhere, and to Neil D. Jackson for suggesting worthwhile
improvements, implementing some of them and testing the network (v2.4, v2.5).

Since preparing the layout a new edition of London's Underground, by John
Glover has been published by Ian Allan Ltd (ISBN 0711023948) price GBP 16.99.
This is a really excellent book which I can wholeheartedly recommend.

Comments and suggestions welcomed. This ZIP archive may be freely distributed

Train formations altered July 1996 (v2.0)
Improved operation Sep 1996 - Jan 1997 (v2.1 - v2.5)

This is version 4.0, May 2006

This version has been considerably expanded by adding most of the BR network
north of the River Thames within the GLC boundary. Train services are only
roughly depicted, and some lines do not have any yet, so you must consider
this layout a 'work in progress'. Time permitting, I will add the SR suburban
lines out to the GLC boundary.

Extensive sets of user-defined Scenery and rolling stock graphics were added/
updated in 2004-06. These may be freely used in your own layouts providing my
copyright is acknowledged.

I am now checking over the layout using Joe Brown's excellent 'London Railway
Atlas', also published by Ian Allan Ltd (ISBN 0711031371).
