       Network for BAHN 3.40

This is a simulation of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's
trolley, subway and trackless trolley lines in Boston. It must be run
using BAHN version 3.40 (or newer) by JB Software, Saxony, Germany.

This layout is based on that produced for Boston in 1986 by Richard W. Beebe.
It has been modfified to use some of the features in BAHN 3.40, to use as
correct and up to date (1996) track map as available and correct schedules,
where possible.

The track plan for the subway and trolley routes is based on the Boston Track
Map for February 1996 produced by Michael Adler and made available on the
New York City Subway Resources Web Site. I have tried to stick to the map as
closely as possible except where the map is either known to be wrong, or
limitations in Bahn don't permit the correct layout to be used
(e.g. North Station).

As BAHN only permits track at 45-degree increments, it was impossible to
lay the system out with true geographic realism. The network is 'loosely' to
scale. All services, however, take more or less the right time to travel end
to end, so the scale is near enough to not matter. There has been no attempt
to accurately represent the yards. They are unchanged from those provided
by Richard unless it has made sense to change them for operational purposes.

The timetables for the subway and trolley lines are based on those published
by the MBTA on their web site, which does not include any extra or short-turn
trains that may be run nor any indication of how and when the frequencies
change. Since the MBTA schedules for the rail lines only give frequencies
for "Rush Hour", "Midday" and "Late Evening", with the times of first and last
trains a lot of guesswork has been necessary. For the purposes of this
simulation "Rush Hour" runs between the first train and 10:00 and between
16:00 and 20:00, "Midday" is between 10:00 and 16:00 and "Late Evening" is
after 20:00. The new frequencies take effect from both ends of the line
simultaneously for the Red and Orange lines and from the outer end of the
Blue. Mattapan and all Green lines except 'E' which is run from the Lechmere
end.

The trackless trolley system layout is based on Richard Beebe's work, little
changed, but with added touches of realism from the MBTA provided route maps
and schedules from their Web site. An attempt has been made to interpret the
schedules for the trackless trolley services so that through running takes
place for appropriate trips. This has been very difficult, as there is
obviously missing information, so guesswork has been necessary again.

The commuter rail track layout is almost all fiction. The schedules are
from the MBTA web site and the rough route of the services is from various
MBTA bus route maps, but the track layout, train consists etc. are totally
unknown. Amtrak services are not included.

Extra services created by Richard have been retained, but modified. There is
now a Green Line D shuttle between Reservoir and Park Street during peak
hours, two trains running on the Red Line B between Alewife and Quincy Center
from start of service until 20:00 and an extra Green Line train running
between North Station surface and Government Centre for no reason other than
it allowed me to use the inner circle at Government Centre.

The following rolling-stock has been used, mainly to provide as near as
possible to the correct colour scheme for each line:
Red: Dortmund Stadtbahn B80C
Red-M: Konstal 13N red/white (OK, so I cheated and these should be green)
Orange: Belgian 6-axle Articulated Double-ended Trams
Green: Basel Be4/6 6-axle Articulated Single-ended Trams
Blue: Munich B-type U-bahn trains
Commuter Rail: DBAG 143 and double-deck coaches in push-pull sets.

I have had to make the following "cheats" to make the layout work:
Orange line: the central track between Community College and Wellington is
only used by northbound trains going to Wellington Yard.
Red Line: knowledge gained elsewhere informs me that the track plan is wrong
at Umass/JFK station which actually has four platform faces, not two.
Green Line: North Station surface should be a stub, but the trams I'm using
are single-ended and it looks wrong if I don't turn them.
The yard access at Reservoir has been guessed, since the track map has no
   detail.
Trackless Trolley: The Harvard bus tunnel is not shown, and the overhead
layout in the Harvard Square area is known to be wrong.

It is not known where and how trains are stored when out of service, so I
have done what looks right.

Thanks are also due to Scott who looks after the New England Transit site
(http://members.aol.com/netransit/index.html) for answering many questions
that were left unanswered by my other sources. I can also thoroughly
recommend his web site for information about transit in New England.

Finally I want to thank Iain Logan for all his advice, encouragement and
criticism whilst I was designing this, my first complete layout.

If anyone can provide me with corrections or more detailed information to
provide a better simulation, I would be very pleased to hear from them. My
e-mail address is listed at the top.
